A Weekend in Lisbon on €500

Lisbon has a reputation as a budget-friendly capital, but "budget-friendly" is doing a lot of work in most articles. Let's put a real number on it: two people, a Friday-to-Sunday trip, a €500 all-in target (flights, room and everything on the ground), leaving from within Europe.

The spread is entirely about the flight window. Fly out on a Friday evening in peak season and you'll blow the budget on the ticket alone. Shift to a Thursday-night or early-Friday departure — or nudge the dates by a few days — and you claw back €80–120 without changing anything else about the trip.

The one decision that makes or breaks the budget

Stay in the right neighbourhood. Lisbon's centre is walkable, so you don't need to pay for a taxi-dependent "cheap" room in the suburbs. Aim for Baixa or the edge of Alfama: central, atmospheric, close to Tram 28, and full of mid-range rooms that don't carry the Chiado premium.

A room here means your transport budget stays tiny — you'll walk most of the trip — and you're a two-minute stroll from dinner every night.

A realistic three days

Friday evening. Land, drop bags, and do nothing ambitious. A glass of vinho verde and grilled sardines near the water, then an early night.

Saturday. The classic loop: Alfama's lanes, the castle for the view, Tram 28 if the queue isn't absurd, then down to the river. Lunch at the Time Out Market (touristy, yes, but genuinely good and cheap if you order smart). Sunset at a miradouro — Lisbon's free viewpoints are the best thing the city gives away.

Sunday. A morning train to Belém for the monastery and the original pastéis de nata, or push a little further to Sintra if you've got the legs for it. Back in time for the flight.
