The three mistakes that double the bill

1. Booking Sagrada Família at the door

Tickets sell out and the on-the-day price is the worst one. Book the big sights ahead and you save both money and an hour of queuing. Every guide should tell you this; most don't put a number on it.

2. Eating on La Rambla

The rule is simple: the closer a restaurant is to La Rambla, the worse the value. Walk five minutes into Gràcia or El Born and the same meal costs half as much and tastes twice as good.

3. Staying by the beach "to save money"

Barceloneta looks cheap until you're paying for taxis every night because everything you want to do is a 30-minute walk away. A central base in Eixample costs a little more per night and saves it back in transport and time.

• Day 1 — Ease in: the Gothic Quarter, a slow tapas dinner, no agenda.
• Day 2 — Gaudí day: Sagrada Família in the morning, Park Güell after, Passeig de Gràcia in between.
• Day 3 — Beach and Barceloneta, seafood lunch, sunset by the water.
• Day 4 — Montjuïc: gardens, viewpoints, the museum you actually care about.
